Miss Amarantha Fennell-Wells

Amarantha Fennell-Wells graduated from Bristol Dental School in 2016 and enjoyed a year living on the English south coast while undertaking Dental Foundation Training. Amarantha completed the full three years of Dental Core Training in a variety of specialties: paediatric, special care and hospital dentistry; dental public health; and a gruelling on-call rota in oral and maxillofacial surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic. Amarantha was a double first prize winner at the National Welsh Dental Specialties Conference 2019 and achieved Distinction in her recently completed Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Leadership and Management. Amarantha’s peer reviewed article on the oral health of child refugees and asylum seekers was published in the British Dental Journal in January 2020.

Fully appreciating the important contribution that sustainability in healthcare can make in tackling the global climate crisis, Amarantha was thrilled to be appointed in 2020 as the first Welsh Clinical Leadership Fellow in Sustainable Healthcare. Amarantha has been working on international efforts concerning nitrous oxide mitigation, as well as engaging and embedding sustainability within quality improvement training. She is a co-founder of Green Health Wales, a national grassroots initiative looking to connect, inspire and empower people in healthcare across Wales to tackle healthcare’s impact on the planet. Amarantha jointly organised and hosted the conference launching the network in June 2021.

Reason for applying for the scheme

Amarantha is ready for the next challenge: working with and learning from the team at the Office of the Chief Dental Officer. Amarantha will be working with leaders in dentistry, who set the strategic vision for England’s oral health and she appreciates the hugely valuable opportunity to influence the policy governing dentistry.
