Chief Pharmaceutical Officer's Clinical Fellow 2023/24
Pharmacist

Since qualifying as a pharmacist Amna has enjoyed carving out her career in hospital pharmacy. She has held in various clinical positions and has worked in District Generals, as well as large teaching hospitals including Leeds and most recently Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Amna has a keen interest in education, transformation including the use of technology to enhance patient care. In her role as a Specialist Pharmacist in Renal Medicine, Amna attained her MSc in Secondary from the University of Bradford which focussed on how the Electronic system the hospital had implemented could be developed to improve communication for transferring patients between colleagues. By using the PDSA quality improvement method, Amna was able to engage key stakeholders to implement the electronic Pharmacy Care Plan to improve communication between colleagues.

In her latest role in Education and Training, Amna has been involved in reviewing the national changes which were implemented to the Foundation Training e Portfolio including the implementation of the Supervised Learning Events. She attained her Clinical Education PGCert from the University of Leeds. The programme gave Amna insight into educational theories and strategies in reference to teaching, learning and assessment in the clinical context. Amna has a passion to see the development of colleagues and thrives when mentoring others. Amna has transformed the training program for Foundation Training Pharmacists in her Trust, and has collaborated with other sectors of pharmacy including Community and Primary Care to allow trainees to gain multi-sector experience during their Foundation Training Year.

Reason for applying for the scheme

Amna’s drive and passion to challenge herself professionally has led her to seize the opportunity to be a Chief Pharmaceutical Officer's Clinical Fellow and in particular work in NHS England Digital Transformation. She is eager to learn from senior leaders at a national level, and share best practice across the industry. The scheme will give her a greater understanding of how decisions are made at a national level which filter down and impact organisations at a local level.

The scheme will afford Amna the opportunity to further develop her understanding on how health systems interact to address diversity and inclusion gaps, and understand how collaboration is vital to improving patient outcomes and experience.

Amna is looking forward to being able to share her perspective and influence decisions as a leader. The prospect of having a network of other CPhO Clinical Fellows in different professions is fantastic and will allow for personal growth through peer to peer learning.

The fellowship is an opportunity to understand how effective leaders work and will allow Amna to develop the skills required in complex decision making. It will contribute to Amna’s practice by allowing her to foster networks which she would ordinarily not have access to, as well as understand issues through a different lens.

Amna is extremely excited for the personal development opportunity the fellowship provides and is looking forward to her journey of self-discovery; stepping out of her comfort zone to emerge as an inclusive, compassionate and strong female leader.
