Dr Asya Mussad

Douglas Fellow, Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management and General Medical Council

Asya Mussad is a specialist registrar in Anaesthesia based in London. She graduated from Khartoum, Sudan in 2006 with honours, after which she pursued Foundation and Anaesthetic training in London. Her most recent role has been working at University College London Hospital. Her anaesthetic career has been fascinating and exciting. She finds that working with different teams in multiple specialities and institutions has taught her to be flexible and communicate effectively with people at different levels and from diverse backgrounds.

As a trainee, Asya championed several quality improvement projects, particularly in the areas of patient safety, quality of care and promotion of leadership. Her most recent project was co-leading a project in Liver Transplantation which resulted in a reduction in extubation times, patient morbidity, and promotion of better resource allocation. She presented locally, nationally and internationally.

Outside medicine, Asya has an active role in fundraising for charity projects in developing countries. She is an avid baker and enjoys Arabic calligraphy.

As an international medical graduate, Asya gained valuable experience of a different healthcare system, particularly working with limited resources. She found a great interest in observing the variances in health system structures and policies in a developing and developed country. She was inspired to learn further about health policy, leadership and management."

Asya advanced in health management by undertaking UCLH’s Executive Shadowing Programme, which allowed her to gain exposure into policy development and strategy. This inspired her as a senior trainee to further develop her understanding in health policy, organisational management, structure and strategy. As a fellow with the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management and the General Medical Council Asya aims to gain maturity in these areas and to experience in-depth how a leading organisation develops policies and work with stakeholders.

In addition to the practical aspects of undertaking the Clinical Scheme, Asya hopes to start an MSc in Health Policy, Planning and Financing which will give her a strong knowledge base.
