Mrs Bernadette Chubb

NHS South West Region
NHS Regional Clinical Leadership Fellow 2022/23
Midwife

Bea qualified as a midwife in 2012 and has recently completed her Masters in Advancing Professional Practice in Midwifery with Plymouth University. Throughout her career she has enjoyed a broad range of experience including holding a specialist role working in safeguarding, as a postnatal ward lead, as a Young Parents midwife and is a Neonatal Life Support instructor. She has been dedicated to service improvement and wanting to provide safest and personalised care and reduce inequality for mothers, birthing people and their families. This has taken many forms including working on Quality Improvement (QI) projects to reduce the incidents of Obstetric Anal Sphincter Injuries (OASI) and working to increase confidence in managing neonatal emergency care in community and hospital settings. Bea has worked with the Academic Health Science Network developing a deeper insight into Quality Improvement on a regional level.

Alongside her clinical labour ward coordinator role, Bea and a colleague have developed a training package aimed at reducing inequality and bias in maternity care, the evaluation of which was published in 2022 in the British Journal of Midwifery. Following this, a train-the-trainer package is being developed to roll out across all units in the South West; this work has been nominated for two national awards.

Reason for applying for the scheme

Bea has an eagerness to learn and develop and applied for this role to continue to do so. She is keen to gain a deeper understanding of healthcare leadership and is excited to have the opportunity to contribute to regional and national priorities.
