Mr David Williams

NHS Midlands Region
NHS Regional Clinical Leadership Fellow 2022/23
Physiotherapist

David Williams graduated from the University of Nottingham with a Physiotherapy BSc (Hons) in 2019. Prior to this, David had several jobs within construction and then served with the Royal Marines for several years, however, injury resulted in medical retirement and pursuing a career within healthcare.

David completed Junior Physiotherapy Rotations at the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton (UDHB) before specialising in musculoskeletal physiotherapy. He also completed a Chief Nurse Junior Fellowship during this period whereby he led quality improvement work into early career allied health professionals. He then took an opportunity to develop laterally and joined the Digital Services Department as a Digital Specialist Physiotherapist whereby he develops digital services within clinical teams.

Alongside this, he leads the Armed Forces Network at UHDB and has a passion to improve veteran care and to increase collaboration with the defence community. He recently led UDHB to obtain the nationally recognised Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Award.

He is currently completing a Health Care Policy and Management MSc at the Health Services Management Centre (HSMC) at the University of Birmingham. He has completed a Healthcare Leadership Academy Scholarship and is a Fellow of the Institute of Leadership and Management.

In 2022, David was appointed as Vice-Chair of the Professional Committee at the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and was awarded the Federation for Informatics Professionals 35 under 35 bursary after being identified as a future digital leader. He is also a Staff Governor at UHDB and a Community Governor at Staffordshire University Academy.

Reason for applying for the scheme

David’s interest in leadership and management was fostered when working in high performing teams within the military. After developing clinically, he is now determined to develop his career in system leadership roles. He hopes to develop the necessary experiences and skills to develop into these roles during his fellowship including developing his leadership capabilities and leading improvement projects across clinical pathways.
Additionally, he has interests in health and public policy and is curious of the current models of healthcare and how systems can improve. He therefore relishes the opportunity to work collaboratively with regional systems and with senior leaders to develop experientially and intellectually.
