Quality Improvement East Midlands

FMLM/ East Midlands LETB 11th March 2013

Change is vital, improvement the logical form of change. JC Penney

Quality Improvement (QI) is a fundamental part of health care, and a key focus for FMLM. It involves making healthcare safe, effective, patient-centred, timely, efficient and equitable (the six dimensions of quality). These dimensions can be complementary or conflicting, but with the current backdrop of economic downturn and challenges posed by performance management, there is a clear need for medical leaders and boards to use resources appropriately.

We were delighted to partner with the East Midlands Local Education and Training Board (LETB) to run a whole day event in Derby on Monday 11th March 2013 to bring together clinicians, FMLM members and LETB staff to share expertise and great ideas to improve the quality of services and care for patients and staff. Small groups then had the opportunity to review examples of advanced quality improvement, identifying key ingredients and barriers to improvement. After lunch, delegates identified ways to build improvement capability and co-design ways to devlop the diverse community the LETB represents - everyone left inspired, with strengthened networks locally and regionally.

Knowledge and understanding of quality improvement in healthcare is important and this event was a unique opportunity to be at the vanguard, supporting and leading others on this agenda. The FMLM hopes to run similar events in other regions soon.
