Mrs HoJan Senya

NHSE Transformation Directorate
Chief Pharmaceutical Officer's Clinical Fellow 2023/24
Pharmacist

HoJan Senya obtained her pharmacy degree from Utrecht University.

The first role she secured as a pharmacist was to design and implement a quality management system in an independent pharmacy. In the project-based work, she used her leadership skills to influence behaviours to fit into amended workflows. She quickly grasped how important co-production is in achieving sustainable change and learned to appreciate the iterative processes in continuous quality improvement.

The Dutch pharmacist moved to England in 2012 and started working at the Royal Devon University Healthcare FT. She became a cancer services pharmacist. Whilst working in a close-knit multidisciplinary team, she discovered the impact she makes on individual patients. She led different service development projects and developed insight into governance processes and procedures.

During this period, she completed her postgraduate diploma in clinical pharmacy at the University of Keele and got interested in further education. She obtained a postgraduate diploma in Law with commendation from De Montfort University in 2017.

Before becoming a clinical fellow, HoJan was a Senior Clinical Trials Pharmacist. As a contributor to discovering treatment options for future patients, she is passionate about her role. A big issue in the research area is the representation of under-served groups, potentially contributing to increased health inequality. HoJan is keen to work on this issue in the future.

Apart from having responsibilities towards her team, she also became an informal coach for her peers and juniors. Coaching has been transformational in her career, and she is keen to give back.

Reason for applying for the scheme

HoJan has always shown a healthy appetite for continuous improvement and pushing for patient-centred care. After working in the hospital environment for over a decade, she is keen to explore further options to develop and create opportunities to make a larger impact on patient care.

A former colleague and mentor of HoJan recognised her need for growth and championed her to apply to become a Clinical Fellow. Having previously worked with a graduate from a past cohort of the Chief Pharmaceutical Officer's Clinical Fellow Scheme, HoJan understands how this unique leadership development program can truly transform and enhance her career.

The scheme will allow HoJan to interact and learn from professionals with diverse backgrounds. She will expand her knowledge and create new opportunities and networks; both will be pivotal in continuing preparations for her future leadership roles. She is excited to gain insight into national strategy setting and policy-making and ready to be pushed out of her comfort zone.

She looks forward to an exciting year working alongside the most senior leaders in the NHS. Working at a national level will undoubtedly give her perspective on system leadership and priority setting. With the knowledge gained, HoJan is determined to contribute to a sustainable NHS where diminishing health inequality and increasing access to healthcare is a priority. She knows digitalisation will play a key role in both objectives.
