How can the FMLM Trainee Steering Group support trainees?

The Trainee Steering Group has a number of past and future projects which aim to support trainees in the leadership development.

  • The leadership development passport was developed to aid trainees in generating and recording their leadership experience. The aim of the passport is to provide a framework within which doctors can add their experience and reflections. This will help demonstrate leadership development for job interviews and ARCPs, while also showing the wide range of options available to trainees who wish to develop their leadership skills.
  • FMLM, including the TSG, has published a series of case studies and interviews during the pandemic which depict the experiences of healthcare professionals in their leadership roles, the challenges they have face and how they overcame them.
  • FMLM Navigator is FMLM’s new career mapping app will provide bespoke career guidance, educational content and the recording of CPD for appraisal, fellowship and job applications.
  • The FMLM ‘Leading as a Junior Doctor’ toolkit is designed to help junior doctors build, sustain and run their own local leadership and engagement structures.  The toolkit includes a number of case studies which showcase good practice from across the country as well as some practical guides to help with the day-to-day management of these groups.
  • The TSG plan to run a series of virtual training sessions which will focus on the leadership development needs of trainees.
  • The FMLM mentoring scheme is unique as it offers access to support from across FMLM's diverse membership base which encompasses a variety of specialties and career grades; from undergraduates to senior medical managers. The FMLM scheme is invaluable in providing independent support which, unlike schemes provided by training providers and specialty specific colleges is geared towards leadership development.
  • The FMLM coaching network provides individuals with access to a range of qualified and experienced coaches across the UK. The network helps doctors to develop their leadership and management skills to improve patient outcomes specifically and healthcare services generally. The coaching network links members with a range of qualified and experienced coaches across the UK.
