Miss Jessie Tebbutt

Health Education England
Chief Dental Officer's Clinical Fellow 2021/22

Jessie Tebbutt qualified from King’s College London in 2016 with honours, winning the University of London Gold Medal for Dentistry. Prior to this, she had completed a Biomedical Sciences BSc, graduating with First Class honours. She spent a year in the South East of England completing her Dental Foundation Training in a busy mixed practice.

Jessie has undertaken three DCT years in the North West in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine and Special Care Dentistry. These roles allowed her to experience not only working within hospital settings, but also Community and Dental Public Health Services. During this time she completed membership examinations of the Joint Dental Faculties (MJDF) and a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education with the University of Central Lancashire, graduating with distinction. She was redeployed to the Intensive Care Unit of the Royal Liverpool University Hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic, assisting the clinical teams in their ward duties and ongoing research projects. Jessie has experience in developing and delivery of inter-professional teaching. She has examined in undergraduate dental examinations and sat on dental interview panels.

Following this, she was successful in the 2020 national recruitment process for specialty training in Special Care Dentistry. Jessie has just finished her first year of training. She is based in the Community Dental Service in Dorset in the South West, working with young persons and adults with additional needs. Committed to postgraduate education, Jessie is currently completing a Postgraduate Diploma in Conscious Sedation with King’s College London.

Reason for applying for the scheme

Having successfully progressed through the current dental training system, Jessie has developed a keen interest in dental education. She hopes her role at HEE will improve her understanding of the broader political landscape of dentistry and education in healthcare. In addition, she anticipates this role will provide her with insight into the strategy for planning and developing future training and educational pathways.

As a Specialty Trainee in Special Care Dentistry, Jessie understands the importance of equipping dentists with the skills and confidence to meet the future dental health needs of our population, improving patient care and health provision. She hopes to contribute towards building a more accessible, adaptive and supportive culture for future trainees.

This scheme will give Jessie a unique opportunity to invest in her personal and professional development. She is excited and enthusiastic about the chance to work in an environment designed to develop leadership and management skills, mentored by experts in the field. This will enable her to develop the behaviours and competencies required to help influence and shape change in organisational cultures.

Jessie will be able to grow through experience in communication, networking, collaborative and oratory skills, helping forge strong relationships with respected leaders of today and tomorrow. This role will empower her by providing a highly valuable transferable skill set she can continue to apply to future challenges.
