Mrs Karleen Johnson-Mundle

NHS South East Region
NHS Regional Clinical Leadership Fellow 2022/23
Nurse

Karleen Johnson-Mundle is an enthusiastic professional nurse whose career spans over twenty years. She has good interpersonal skills, self-motivated, positive thinker, confident and has an absolute passion for nursing, education and interest in improvement of healthcare. She qualified as a registered general nurse and registered midwife and has experience in various clinical areas.

During her time on the surgical ward, Karleen had the opportunity to combine both her passion for nursing and education by developing and implementing a teaching programme not only for her ward but other surgical wards.
In 2009, Karleen was successful in obtaining the role of Nursing Education Facilitator to make the natural progression into nursing education. She managed the Priorities of Care Project (New Model of Care) - implemented assessment tool to prioritise patient care and improve nursing documentation and led on the Trust Preceptorship Programme. Subsequently her role has expanded to include Lead for the Trust Return to Practice and Post Graduate Nursing Programmes.

Karleen presented a Poster on the Priorities of Care Project at the Hospital Research Conference (2011), a Poster at Preceptorship Conference ( 2016) and was a speaker on recruitment and workforce issues at the Return to Practice Conference (2016).

In terms of education, Karleen received her BSc (Hons) degree in Nursing Studies (top up) from City University, London (2012). Karleen commenced Masters of Arts in Academic Practice that same year as she felt that this would increase her knowledge and skills in the education role. She gained the Associate Fellow of Higher Education Academy (HEA) in 2013, Fellow of HEA in 2014, and her MA in 2016.

Reason for applying for the scheme

Karleen has over the years of her professional life contributed to the NHS both clinically and in nursing education at local healthcare Trust. Karleen felt that she had more to give and wanted to explore how she could develop further, make quality improvements and help realise her vision of being a stronger nurse leader. Karleen has always known that she would like to be in a position of influence, to make an impact, to make a difference in healthcare. At this stage in her career, Karleen felt that she would like to broaden her experience and horizons by exploring how the NHS works on a regional and national level.

Karleen had a career conversation with her chief nurse about her aspirations and future development, however the opportunities that were available were not suitable at the time. For Karleen, it was important that she remained true to herself and focussed. The leadership fellowship scheme came at a time when Karleen was searching for the next step to develop her career. It is Karleen’s desire to have the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to influence decisions, and make improvements in the health care system. The NHS Regional Clinical Leadership Fellow Scheme aligns with Karleen’s personal and professional development and offers the perfect opportunity to gain experience in system leadership and service improvement. It is hoped that this will open the door for the next phase of her career.
