Miss Kelsie Reading

NHS London Region
NHS Regional Clinical Leadership Fellow 2022/23
Nurse

Kelsie Reading studied nursing in Brisbane, Australia and began her career there, working in a busy emergency department as a graduate. Kelsie then moved into Indigenous primary healthcare, in an urban setting. It was in Indigenous health that she found a passion for public health and working with marginalised communities to improve health outcomes for the most at risk.

She then headed to the United Kingdom and settled in London, for a change of scenery. She has worked in a variety of settings, whilst awaiting her NMC registration, including a children's hospice and in private healthcare on Harley Street.

By being in Harley Street, Kelsie was able to network with consultants across a variety of specialties and gravitated towards breast care nursing, working alongside breast surgeons and reconstructive surgeons. This allowed Kelsie to develop her knowledge and skills in surgical cancer nursing and particularly within a specialist nursing role providing support to patients.

To widen her experience, Kelsie started in the NHS as a Breast Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist, being a primary source of support and information to people undergoing all modes of treatment for breast cancer, and across a socioeconomically diverse population in London.

From this, Kelsie became interested in Palliative Care and has now been working as a Palliative Care Clinical Nurse Specialist for the last 2 years. Through this role Kelsie has been able to apply her range of skills, working with a culturally diverse population, and the multi-disciplinary team. She is a strong advocate for her patients and families and enjoys working with a wide variety of patients with malignant or non-malignant life limiting illnesses, particularly those who are most disadvantaged. Kelsie has also developed an interest in quality improvement and incorporates opportunities for this within her role.

Reason for applying for the scheme

Kelsie applied for the fellowship to broaden her experience in applying her clinical skills to quality and continuous improvement projects. Whilst enjoying her clinical role and patient contact, Kelsie would like to branch out into a more non-patient facing role to complement her clinical work. Kelsie is keen to begin to utilise her varied clinical background in a public and population health arena and work from a regional level. She is passionate about learning and growing and wants to challenge herself, and therefore applied for the scheme. Kelsie is looking forward to meeting people, networking, and learning a new set of skills around leadership and project management that will hopefully move her to the next step in her career.
