Major General Martin CM Bricknell

Lead for the Armed Forces

Major General Bricknell is currently Director of Medical Policy, Operations and Capability within HQ Surgeon General under Headquarters Joint Forces Command. He commissioned in 1987 after attending Southampton University Medical School. His first tour was Regimental Medical Officer to 1 PARA. He then undertook training as a General Practitioner inGermanyandCyprus. Following this he trained in Occupational Medicine including a tour as second-in-command of 23 Parachute Field Ambulance. He commanded 22 Field Hospital during which the unit was awarded the Wilkinson Sword of Peace for service in the Balkans.

He completed training in Public Health whilst Chief Instructor at the Defence Medical Services Training Centre. After a tour as SO1 Medical in United Kingdom Support Command (Germany), he was promoted Colonel into the post of Chief Medical Adviser, Headquarters Allied Rapid Reaction Corps. This tour included a period as the Medical Adviser in the HQ International Security Assistance Force (ISAF IX) inKabulin 2006. He attended Advanced Command and Staff Course 12. This was followed by a one year tour as the Medical Adviser, Headquarters Regional Command (South) in 2010 from which he was awarded US Bronze Star.

He completed two further appointments in the Army Medical Directorate in Army Headquarters, Assistant Director Healthcare Review and Assistant Director Medical Capability before promotion to Brigadier and becoming Head of Medical Operations and Capability in HQ Surgeon General. This tour included the drawdown from Afghanistan and the Ebola crisis in West Africa. After attending the first term at the Royal College of Defence Studies, he was appointed to his current post in Dec 2015.

Major General Bricknell was awarded the Order of St John in 2013. He holds a PhD, a doctorate in medicine and three masters degrees. He has over 50 academic papers cited in Pub Med covering military medical operations and military health subjects. He is married to Kathryn. They have 2 daughters working in London and a third in secondary school. His sporting interests include triathlon and swimming.
