Mr Dominic Innes-Taylor

Office of the Chief Dental Officer
Chief Dental Officer's Clinical Fellow 2023/24
Dentist

After qualifying from the University of Birmingham, Dom carried out his Dental Foundation Training in Essex. During this time, he volunteered his weekends in a London Intensive Care Unit, overpopulated with Covid-19 patients and was soon appointed the Proning Team Lead. Having had an early experience of leadership, Dom sought further opportunities through Dental Core Training. He experienced a variety of specialties including Orthodontics, Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Surgery and Oral Medicine, throughout which he led a number of audits and publications, presented up to international level. In addition to being the Rota-Coordinator, he also played an instrumental role in the organisational management of a busy Maxillofacial Department due to an unfilled managerial post. Dom has further shown his dedication to leadership and self-improvement by completing the Edward Jenner Programme and Oxford Medical 'Teach-the-Teacher' course, as well as gaining his membership to the Faculty of Dental Surgery with the Edinburgh Royal College of Surgeons. Dom is also passionate about teaching, having been a personal tutor and Basic Life Support instructor. He has also been an undergraduate clinic supervisor, delivering weekly teaching to students at the Belfast school of Dentistry.

Reason for applying for the scheme

Being of both British and French nationality, Dom was fortunate to gain insight into the healthcare system of another country and draw comparisons with our NHS. Whilst he enjoys day-to-day clinical practice, the opportunities of this scheme sparked his epidemiological interests, as well as his desire to offer more. Dom hopes to make an impact at a pivotal junction in time which may see an array of policy changes and peel back the curtain on the political landscape of dentistry and healthcare. Whilst teamwork, communication and motivation are his strong suits, he feels there is more he can do to support and learn from those working with a population-approach, as well as an individual one. He also wishes to further develop his public speaking and strategic thinking but just as importantly, listen to new ideas and perspectives. Participation in this scheme will provide him a springboard for future involvement in guideline-making and give him the tools to effectively implement the healthcare leadership model on a larger stage.
