Dr Allaan Heewa

General Dental Council
Chief Dental Officer's Clinical Fellow 2023/24
Dentist

Dr Allaan Heewa qualified from Barts and the London in 2019. During his time at university, he won several prizes in different subjects, including Orthodontics and was awarded the prestigious Drapers Company Award.

Allaan has gone on to work across several clinical settings within primary, secondary and tertiary care. He has completed his Dental Core Training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Orthodontics at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary, in addition to Paediatric Dentistry at the Royal London Dental Hospital. During this time he has published several papers in peer-reviewed journals and has given oral/poster presentations at international conferences. From there, he was awarded “Best Research Project'' by Health Education England. In addition, he has recently been awarded the winner of the “Young Dentist Competition”.

As a clinician, he is driven by research and is currently collaborating with the Royal College of Midwives conducting a national data collection in the management of tongue ties, for future national guidelines. He is passionate about reducing health inequalities and improving health for marginalised communities. This, coupled with his strong background in understanding systems and principles of resource management, drives his work in quality and service improvement, which has permeated his dental career to date.

Reason for applying for the scheme

Allaan initially wanted to join the fellowship to understand how policies and systems can improve the workplace for clinicians and have a positive impact on patient care. He hopes he can develop his personal leadership skills whilst broadening his understanding of healthcare management and wider challenges facing dentistry in the UK.

Allaan is a firm believer in maximising health by using an inclusive, multi-organisational and multi-professional partnership approach, to drive outcomes forwards at both a societal and individual level.

The FMLM programme provides the opportunity to gain a unique insight into the role of key NHS partners, and Allaan is hoping to gain a better understanding of the roles that different organisations contribute, whilst also gaining an overview of regulation, policy and legislation development.

Allaan is delighted to be joining the Chief Dental Officer's Clinical Fellow Scheme and hopes that the educational experience that this will provide will enable him to grow his leadership style under expert mentorship, whilst developing the management tools that will allow him to better serve patients at a broader level as he creates meaningful change.
