College Office-Bearers Leadership Programme

What is it?

In 2013 FMLM developed a programme specifically designed for senior doctors in college leadership roles. The programme was developed in conjunction with the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (AoMRC).

How it works

The programme generally consists of six modules:

  • Future, Engage, Deliver – led by Steve Radcliffe, author of the best-selling book Leadership: Plain and Simple
  • Intensive one-to-one diagnostic session to understand own behaviour, ‘derailers’ and impact on others
  • Working with government, the media and the Department of Health –The Westminster Experience, a unique simulation on what it is like to work in government
  • How to influence with integrity – led by a highly experienced development coach
  • Working together: colleges and faculties, NHS England and NHS Managers – exploring areas of mutual interest

The programme is overseen and supported by Mr Peter Lees, FMLM Chief Executive and Medical Director, and Professor Sir Neil Douglas, FMLM Chair and former President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and AoMRC.

What it means for doctors and organisations

This bespoke programme has helped to draw out the individual and collective leadership potential of all those who have attended and given true insight into own behaviour and impact on others.

“The programme provided a practical and common sense approach to aspects of leadership which are highly applicable to college work…It provided an opportunity to share experience and network with colleagues from other colleges.  I anticipate that this will greatly enhance future working between the organisations.” Dr Jim Bolton, Associate Registrar Royal College of Psychiatrists

Participants' views

“This is an extremely useful programme. I think it is very important for presidents and potential presidents. I think that the minute someone is elected president, they should be alerted to the programme and slotted in as soon as possible…It really helps people to develop the essential skills of leadership they need for the role.Ian Ritchie, President Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh
