About Me

I am an ILM level 7 certified Executive Coach and Mentor and a member of the Association for Coaching. I endeavour to adhere to the Global Code of Ethics for Coaches and Mentors.

I am a practising public health doctor and bring to my coaching practice my experience as an executive director who has worked at board level in the UK health service for nearly 20 years. This includes more than fifteen years as a medical director responsible for professional leadership of medical staff including revalidation, performance, training and development.

In my professional and executive roles I have advised boards and governments on policy and strategy and led change in significant areas of health service delivery, through motivating and encouraging people to strive for service and personal improvement and drawing on highly developed skills in building relationships.

My focus has always been on a commitment to learning (from successes, complaints, concerns, incidents, audit, and research and development) to ensure the development and delivery of an effective, outcome focused, quality improvement service centred on public and individual experience and safety.

My practice is informed by the GMC guide to Good Medical Practice and the seven principles of standards in public life with a strong personal commitment to integrity, objectivity and honesty.

Coaching Process

My approach starts with an agreement on the coach-client relationship, our respective responsibilities, a description of my coaching services and the terms and conditions of my offer as a coach. As a Caldicott Guardian I have a strong commitment to confidentiality and will ask you to consent to the processing of your personal data.

The success of the coaching relationship is founded on clear mutual understanding of the client’s and the clients sponsor’s needs, goals and objectives. I may explore client factors to assess their suitability for coaching to ensure that there is a good fit between us. I may also encourage the client to undertake self-assessment tests to explore their preferences, strengths, beliefs and values. I will listen attentively, challenge and feedback and use my knowledge and experience from my coaching practice, informed where appropriate by my executive medical leadership experience, to enable clients to identify and achieve personal development goals and improve their performance.

I will not enter into a therapeutic relationship and I do not offer counselling services. If there is a risk that our relationship is no longer about coaching and mentoring I will reassess the need and if necessary signpost the client to a more appropriate service.

What can I offer you?

I can support doctors in their professional development as they prepare for or progress in their leadership and management journey, and the life and career transitions they face. I do so by encouraging them to set challenging goals, attach realistic timelines and identify measurable outcomes. I use a range of models including goal and solution-focused and strengths-based coaching, the Skilled Helper Model and tools and techniques that explore the client’s values.

Throughout the coaching relationship I will undertake formative assessment of the client’s progress, a mid-point review and summative assessment at the end of the contracted engagement. Tools I might use include modified methods based on the Kirkpatrick model, goal attainment scaling, Grant’s well-being and engagement framework, and for individual and team development, appreciative inquiry, world café, open space, and participant directed feedback. Where it is appropriate, with medical clients I will frame the assessment against the client’s progress in meeting the Leadership and Management Standards for Medical Professionals. My relationship with the client’s sponsor will be discussed and agreed at the start of the engagement and I will encourage sponsor and stakeholder feedback (where appropriate) on the client’s progress including formal 360 feedback methods.

Consistent with my drive for self-improvement I undertake reflective practice and I have a personal development plan that includes auditable continuing professional development and a commitment to undertake regular coaching supervision.
