Fellowship achievements
I worked with CQC’s emergency medicine working group to deliver a series of focused inspections of emergency departments, to assess how patient safety is affected by crowding and winter pressures. National datasets and local intelligence were used to identify emergency departments most at risk for crowding and patient safety. We inspected twelve of these departments using a one-day focused approach incorporating a new five-part evidence-based safety assessment, aligned to CQC’s safety key question. Inspectors and providers found this approach effective and reliable, and CQC are continuing to develop this work for the winter 2019-20 period.

I have also led on the report for CQC’s AMSAT (Assessment of Mental Services in Acute Trusts) program, and have established a program of junior doctor focus groups to inform the well-led domain of CQC’s inspections.

Leadership reflections
The need to engage with other stakeholders and senior leaders has forced me to develop my networking skills and challenge my ‘imposter syndrome’; skills which I know will be useful in my future career. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the scheme and am hugely grateful for the productive collaborations and friendships forged with other fellows. I’ve returned to full-time clinical practice for my final year of training and hope to combine a career as a consultant neurologist alongside opportunities to lead.
