Dr Ayisha Ashmore

Clinical Fellow, Care Quality Commission

Ayisha trained at Hull-York Medical School, completing her MBBS in 2015 and graduating with an intercalated Masters in Public Health with Merit. Whilst at medical school, she helped to develop a community first-responders scheme and volunteered in Tanzania, working to promote HIV/AIDS awareness as part of the Students for Kids Project. Following medical school, she completed her foundation training in Wessex and commenced specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the East Midlands. She currently works as an Obstetrics and Gynaecology registrar at the Leicester Royal Infirmary.

During her medical training, Ayisha has led numerous quality improvement projects and has presented at both national and international conferences. She has received several awards for communication and clinical excellence. Throughout her training, she has published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, including involvement in an award-winning multicentre study examining obstetric anal sphincter injuries.

Ayisha has undertaken key leadership roles within her deanery, including lead for teaching in the South East Midlands deanery for obstetrics and gynaecology. Through this work, she has attended School Board committee meetings and has helped to optimise the delivery of the training programme for her peers. She was also nominated as a trainee representative to assist in coordinating a cultural change in the delivery of training and rota functioning at the Leicester Royal Infirmary.

Outside of medicine, Ayisha is a keen sportswoman. She has proudly captained many netball teams and, most recently, has taken up cricket in a local women’s league. She also has two dogs who she adores.

Ayisha’s interest in medical leadership developed over the course of many years. Her initial engagement with the area stemmed from practical frustrations while conducting local and national audits. Feeling unable to affect substantive improvements from her clinical role, Ayisha sought opportunities to engage with policy making and clinical governance. As a result, she is especially interested in learning about service development, health policy and pragmatic considerations for large scale policy implementation. Over the course of this fellowship, Ayisha will be working with the Care Quality Commission for Primary Care. She hopes that she will learn valuable leadership and management skills that she can utilise in the future - improving the quality of care for all and helping to instigate positive change at a local and national level.
