Dr Cian Wade

Clinical Fellow, NHS England and NHS Improvement and Academy of Medical Royal Colleges

Cian studied medicine at the University of Oxford, graduating in 2018 with a string of prizes and scholarships to his name. Prior to arriving at Oxford, Cian co-founded a charity based in his hometown of Cardiff, which raised tens of thousands of pounds for local healthcare projects. Spurred on by the challenge of these activities, Cian continued to lead on a range of projects aimed at enhancing the academic, sporting and charitable communities at Oxford. These achievements included organising conferences exploring international responses to global infectious diseases, captaining the men’s Blues football team in the first Varsity match in 133 years to be held alongside the women’s fixture, and contributing extensively to the University’s increasingly successful access schemes.

After being appointed as an academic foundation doctor in the Oxford deanery, Cian continued his contribution to ambitious, large-scale projects. He led an international collaboration aimed at developing new neonatal analgesic guidelines in Kenya. Cian’s group’s work has recently been implemented into national guidelines by the Kenyan Ministry of Health, and the findings published in the Lancet Child & Adolescent Health. Further work with NHSEngland and NHS Improvement has involved developing recommendations for reducing the incidence of gram-negative bloodstream infections in the UK. Currently holding a lectureship position at Jesus College at Oxford University, Cian has also contributed substantially to innovative clinical teaching methods during the covid-19 pandemic. He has also provided commentary to the BMJ and other academic journals on the various implications of the pandemic for junior doctors and clinical academic training.

The common theme running through these activities is Cian’s enjoyment of bringing together talented and dynamic individuals with a diverse range of experiences in order to tackle complex, and wide-ranging problems relevant to healthcare. Ultimately, he is motivated by meaningfully improving the quality and content of care provided to patients throughout the country. He aims to achieve this through facilitating the effective translation of good quality evidence and data into optimised clinical services from the perspective of what is delivered and how it is delivered. This requires a large range of skills from multiple stakeholders, and ultimately expert leadership and management is needed at the core of the process. Cian hopes that his fellowship year will provide him with the experience and skills to be able to play a key role in the evolution of healthcare provision in this country for years to come.
