Dr Akanksha Mimi Malhotra

Clinical Fellow, The Health Foundation

Mimi undertook medical training at King’s College London where she gained her MBBS with distinction and an intercalated BSc in Physiology. Upon graduating, she completed the Academic Foundation Programme, researching the epidemiology of atypical mycobacteria, latent tuberculosis screening and smoking cessation. She has since completed core medical training with a view to becoming a respiratory academic clinician.

Throughout her training, Mimi has demonstrated a strong enthusiasm for medical education, having regularly taught and mentored students as an honorary teaching fellow at Queen Mary University of London. She developed innovative teaching sessions and was awarded a regional prize for this.

Mimi has presented at national and international conferences, and published in academic journals. She has completed courses and gained postgraduate qualifications including the Diploma of the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists and Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education with distinction.

Mimi is keen to develop further as a leader. She has held a number of leadership positions including president of a university global health society, co-founder of Ethical Procurement for Health National Working Group, UKFPO Foundation Doctor Advisory Board representative and elected doctors’ mess president. Mimi is currently vice-president of the Royal Society of Medicine Respiratory Council.

She is passionate about her work with third sector organisations, such as with the Doctors of the World’s clinic for undocumented migrants. This continues to provide her with an insight into the challenges faced by vulnerable populations, the complexity of our healthcare system and the interplay with health governance."

Mimi is delighted to have been appointed as a National Medical Director’s Clinical Fellow. Her excitement stems from the opportunity that this scheme provides to further develop her skills, knowledge and experience in leadership and management within the NHS landscape. In doing so, she hopes to make a more impactful contribution to patients and society.

Throughout her training, she has been interested in improving healthcare delivery, policy development and implementation science. In particular, Mimi is drawn to work around the social determinants of health, access to care for marginalised groups and tackling health inequities. She has gained a strong understanding of these areas from her clinical training, research, voluntary activities and advocacy work in ethical procurement for health.

She hopes to build on these and other areas by deepening her understanding of data analytics, anchor institutions and the role of partner organisations in healthcare delivery. She is excited to work with The Health Foundation, contributing to their aim of building a healthier population that is supported by high quality health care that can be equitably accessed.

Mimi is looking forward to collaborating with colleagues on the scheme and senior healthcare leaders at The Health Foundation and beyond to meet these and other key healthcare objectives. If you would like to get in touch about any of these topics, she is very happy to be contacted.
