Dr Daniel Smith

Clinical Fellow, NHS England and NHS Improvement Midlands

Daniel is a Respiratory Medicine Specialist Registrar at Nottingham University Hospitals. He studied at Nottingham University and subsequently completed his Foundation and Core Medical training in the East Midlands.

During specialty training, Daniel undertook a two year Health Education East Midlands, Leadership Fellowship and completed an MBA in Healthcare Management. The fellowship, based at Sherwood Forest Hospitals, allowed Daniel the opportunity to work and learn from senior leaders, represent junior doctors and engage in multiple projects in digital transformation, service development and medical workforce. During this period Daniel led a quality improvement programme “Acute non-invasive ventilation (NIV), a journey to outstanding care”, that was shortlisted for the 2019 Health Service Journal, Quality improvement initiative of the year and the Royal College of Physicians, Excellence in Patient care Quality Improvement award.

Following Daniel’s fellowship, he pursued a portfolio career, working less than full time clinically to continue in a leadership role at Sherwood Forest Hospitals and as a Clinical Associate for the Emergency Care Improvement Support Team (NHSEngland and NHS Improvement) supporting trusts to deliver high quality emergency care.

Daniel applied for the scheme as he believes it is an excellent opportunity to continue to develop his leadership skills and is keen to learn and collaborate with other fellows on the FMLM programme. Daniel is excited to be joining the team at NHS England and NHS Improvement Midlands to participate in the development of regional healthcare strategy, policy and initiatives.
