Miss Katy Martin

NHS Regional Clinical Fellow Scheme 2021/22

Katy qualified as a dentist from the University of Sheffield in 2014, before completing Dental Foundation Training in London. She completed Dental Core Training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in the East of England and South Yorkshire before commencing a Specialist Registrar position in Oral Surgery at Birmingham Dental Hospital and School of Clinical Dentistry in 2018. Katy has recently been successful in the Tri-Collegiate Membership in Oral Surgery examinations with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. She is due to shortly complete her specialty training which will allow specialist registration in Oral Surgery with the General Dental Council.

In her current post, Katy is a patient safety ambassador, and has led division-wide projects on safety in conscious sedation and improving the preoperative management of paediatric patients undergoing general anaesthesia. She has also initiated a trust wide oral health project, designed to improve the oral health of adults and children in the community. She has presented both nationally and internationally on projects completed during her training.

Katy has also furthered her own postgraduate education by recently completing a Masters in Dental Education. She is actively involved in the delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, having co-organised an international Autotransplantation Conference in 2020, alongside regional study days in the Midlands. Katy was elected as the National Recruitment Training Representative in Oral Surgery. She also acts as a Regional Representatives for the British Association of Oral Surgery in the West Midlands.

Reason for applying for the scheme

Katy is looking forward to the upcoming Clinical Fellowship scheme, and hopes this will offer the opportunity to develop the key leadership skills required to be an innovative and pioneering consultant. The clinical fellowship scheme will allow Katy to enhance her understanding of NHS systems and policy development at both regional and national level, in addition to providing a unique experience in working with and forming relationships with current and future healthcare leaders.Katy hopes that the fellowship will allow her to continue to build upon her current interests in patient safety and education, in addition to working with those who are fundamental in culturing positive changes within the NHS. She hopes that the fellowship will develop the key skills needed to facilitate positive changes within the dental profession, and contribute to the continuing development of links between dentistry and the wider healthcare system.
