Dr Shima Chundoo

NHS Regional Clinical Fellow Scheme 2021/22

Dr Shima Chundoo studied Dentistry at the University of Birmingham and graduated as Bachelor of Dental Surgery in 2016. She achieved her MFDS postgraduate qualification from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2018. Shima completed foundation training within the City Scheme of HEE West Midlands Deanery. After completing Dental Core Training years 1 and 2 at Shrewsbury and Telford Trust, Shima is currently a Dental Core Trainee 3 in Paediatric dentistry and Oral and Maxillofacial surgery at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

Shima has had her work published at national and international conferences. She plays a very active role in clinical governance, completing over 11 audits in the past five years. Shima has successfully completed interviews with over 100 patients regarding improvements to service provision. She has further developed patient and public leaflets as well as the creation of major maxillofacial trauma proforma for use within her trust. It is evident that she is passionate about developing patient services and successful in bringing about changes to her clinical environment. She has an active interest in teaching and is currently studying for a PG Diploma in Medical Education. Shima is due to start work as an NHS regional clinical fellow in leadership and management from September 2021.

Reason for applying for the scheme

Shima’s interest in medical leadership and management was first ignited by her experience as a rota coordinator and her three years of dental core training. She has further developed strong clinical experience in maxillofacial surgery and paediatric dentistry. This fellowship will provide Shima with a truly unique leadership experience and the opportunity to learn from well-respected leaders in the NHS.Shima is acutely aware of the challenges facing junior staff regarding redeployment and reduced training possibilities, and she believes this scheme will help her to coordinate and deliver effective learning opportunities on a national level.

Shima is extremely passionate about clinical governance and has completed over 11 audits in the last five years. She has successfully completed three closed loop audits which are a testament to her ability in achieving clinical results. Developing services and facilitating an improvement to patient care is paramount for Shima. She hopes her fellowship experience will help to strengthen her commitment to the delivery of patient care, within a wider environment, and indeed the NHS.

Shima is passionate about cultivating a resilient and innovative response to the problems facing the NHS. She is particularly interested in the role of interdisciplinary communication and collaboration to help achieve improvements to patient care. Through her clinical fellowship, Shima hopes to enhance her understanding of service provision as well as develop an unparalleled insight into the challenges facing healthcare services today. This fellowship will ultimately help to develop Shima as a future leader within the NHS.
