Mr Ryan Passey

London Region 2021/22
NHS Regional Clinical Fellow Scheme 2021/22

Ryan Passey graduated from Kings College London in 2014 with a BSc (Hons) in Nursing Studies (Mental Health). His first post was working as a staff nurse on a female psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU) providing specialist inpatient care for patients with primary diagnoses of mania or psychosis, where they presented a high level of risk to themselves and others. Ryan was later promoted to clinical team leader, deputising for the ward manager and providing leadership and supervision to junior members of staff. Ryan also led on a Quality Improvement (QI) project focused on reducing restrictive interventions. As part of this role he also managed the adult mental health beds for the local borough as well as holding duty senior nurse responsibilities for an eight-ward hospital. Ryan then went on to become the ward manager for a mixed acute mental health ward, caring for adults with a wide range of mental health conditions. With high demand for beds this required a focus on reducing length of admission and close collaboration with external partners to ensure timely and safe discharge. Ryan is currently a ward manager on an older adult mental health ward, where patients have a range of organic and functional mental health conditions as well as complex physical health needs. Ryan led on a falls reduction project, piloted electronic prescribing on his ward, and is currently part of the Enjoying Work collaborative with RCPsych to improve staff wellbeing.

Reason for applying for the scheme

Ryan developed a keen interest in service improvement and leadership development early on in his career. As a newly qualified staff nurse he took up the additional role of smoking cessation lead for the ward, joining the implementation strategy group for an eight-ward mental health site, and developed information leaflets and patient education resources in collaboration with service users. Ryan then became part of a QI project to reduce the use of restrictive interventions (RI), implementing a range of change ideas on the ward and providing monthly feedback to the Trustwide RI focus group. As a ward manager for an older adult inpatient ward Ryan has led on a reducing falls QI project as part of the IHI QI Practicum, and is currently leading on an Enjoying Work collaborative project to improve staff wellbeing. During the covid-19 crisis Ryan has led his team on the front line providing mental health services to an extremely clinically vulnerable population, managing local outbreaks and ensuring staff have been adequately supported in implementing rapidly evolving guidelines. Recently Ryan has been acting as a clinical champion for electronic prescribing and medicines administration (EPMA), with the ward he manages being selected as the pilot ward for this new system. Ryan is excited to improve the use of technology in healthcare settings, and has a passion for supporting staff working in stressful environments.
