Dr Oliver Coen

North East and Yorkshire Region 2021/22
NHS Regional Clinical Fellow Scheme 2021/22

Oliver completed his medical degree at Imperial College in 2013, having also undertaken an intercalated year in Neuroscience and Mental Health. His foundation years were spent within the Oxford Deanery where he developed his interest in Quality Improvement and Patient Safety through the Royal College of Physicians Learning to Make a Difference Programme.

Oliver moved to Yorkshire to commence his core medical training and for the last six years has called this down-to-earth county his home. Through his early training experiences Oliver developed his interest in Oncology – enjoying the variety, patient-focussed and team based-approach that providing care to those with cancer brings. Oliver is now a Clinical Oncology registrar, based in West Yorkshire, in the later stages of his training.

Most recently, Oliver decided to take a year-away from training to further his interest in leadership and patient safety. Working for the Improvement Academy, based in Bradford, Oliver has had the opportunity to lead patient safety work for the region as part of the Yorkshire and Humber Patient Safety Collaborative. Oliver has valued the experience of working with those from multi-professional backgrounds across a regional footprint – helping to support frontline teams to make positive differences to quality of care provided. This work has further emphasised the importance of building relationships to support and maintain engagement, especially in the context of external pressures.

Reason for applying for the scheme

Oliver is excited about his role as an NHS Regional Clinical Fellow for NHS North East & Yorkshire. He hopes the scheme will enable him to gain greater experience of working collaboratively with multiple stakeholders and further develop key skills in strategic thinking, negotiation and working together to enable change. Oliver is keen to build on his understanding of how health policy can be effectively translated into health systems and how this can be adapted to local need. Oliver is inspired by strong leaders and hopes to further develop his own leadership style so he can be an effective clinical leader of the future.
