Ms Rose Ingleton

Sustainable Healthcare Coalition
Chief Sustainability Officer's Clinical Fellow 2023/24
Doctor

Rose completed a degree in Natural Sciences at University College London before studying Graduate Entry Medicine at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry where she graduated in 2015. She is currently a Neurosurgery Specialty Registrar in the London Deanery and will be entering her ST6 training year.

Rose has a keen interest in medical education and after completing her two medical foundation years, she worked for one year as a Clinical Teaching Fellow, delivering undergraduate education in anatomy. During this role she studied for a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice achieving distinction. She is also committed to encouraging the next generation of women in surgery, given that historically there has been a significant gender imbalance across all surgical divisions. To diversify the specialty, she has been involved in several female mentorship schemes and has been invited to speak at women in surgery events and conferences.

For the last two years, Rose has held the role of London Neurosurgery Trainee Representative. Her responsibilities for this role include organising regional deanery teaching, providing trainee pastoral support and raising any training issues that arise. She also sits on the British Neurosurgery Trainees Association council, allowing her to represent the interests of neurosurgery trainees nationwide.

Reason for applying for the scheme

Rose is passionate about the role surgeons can play in delivering the NHS net zero agenda through greener surgery initiatives. In a hospital environment, the operating theatre has always historically been one of the single-biggest contributors to harmful greenhouse gases through the use of single-use items, unnecessary packaging/plastics and the emissions associated with some anaesthetic agents. By working with the Sustainable Healthcare Coalition, Rose hopes to collaborate with industry partners and healthcare providers to identify areas within the surgical care pathway where change can be made.

As a senior trainee in neurosurgery, Rose is also excited about the prospect of dedicated time and focused support to develop her leadership skills as she enters her final years before becoming a consultant. Working in a specialty such as neurosurgery requires excellent communication skills, the ability to self-reflect/learn from mistakes and the capacity to work harmoniously within a multi-disciplinary environment in order to succeed. Participation in this fellowship scheme will allow Rose to expand and enhance her existing skill-set to become a leader and role-model within her field.
