Mr Ryan Deakin

NHS Midlands Region
NHS Regional Clinical Leadership Fellow 2022/23
Physiotherapist

Ryan studied Biomedical Sciences at Nottingham Trent University, graduating in 2006. He then gained employment in the NHS as a Healthcare Assistant where he developed his interest in both care and rehabilitation, and proceeded to successfully complete an MSc Physiotherapy degree at the University of Essex in 2007, graduating in 2009.

Following qualification, and an initial introduction to physiotherapy in a private hospital setting, Ryan returned to the NHS as a Junior Rotational Physiotherapist working at Broomfield Hospital in Essex. He gained experience working in multiple adult physiotherapeutic and multidisciplinary environments prior to specialising within Burns and Plastics.

January 2013 saw Ryan relocate to the West Midlands following a successful appointment to Birmingham Children’s Hospital as a paediatric physiotherapist, an area of practice he had little experience in but had always felt he was well-suited to and wanted to explore. Ryan has not looked back since, progressing through junior and senior rotational positions to his current role as an Advanced Physiotherapist working in musculoskeletal outpatients. He has held his role as lead outpatient physiotherapist for over four years.

The mainstay of Ryan’s current role is clinical, but he is also responsible for the day-to-day running of the service, working closely with stakeholders, support staff and colleagues, in a bid to provide high levels of care, to develop effective system processes, and to create a great environment to work.

Reason for applying for the scheme

Ryan has always believed in providing the best care possible to meet the changing needs of patients and their families, and is a true advocate for transformation and service improvement.

As it was for many, the pandemic proved to be a challenging time for Ryan and hampered his ability to deliver on his goals and standards. Usually striving to inspire, Ryan found his resilience and core values were often tested. Reflection helped change his perceptions of how care could be delivered and how services could be improved, as well his own role as a leader within that sphere. Ryan sought extra training and gained a place on an internal leadership programme, which improved his self-awareness and provided him with tools to manage people and lead local change.

The course highlighted the potential he had as a leader within the NHS, and motivated him to want to develop further. The Clinical Leadership Scheme looked to be a fantastic opportunity and the perfect next step in his leadership journey. The prospect of achieving enhanced leadership competence and advanced communication skills, whilst working on healthcare policy and complex issues alongside highly experienced and senior professionals, was an opportunity not to be missed.

Ryan is excited by the challenge ahead and is motivated to learn about system leadership in modern healthcare, as well as being eager to learn about leading on a broader spectrum and developing beyond his role as a team lead physiotherapist.
