Mrs Sarah Paxman

NHS London Region 2021/22
NHS Regional Clinical Fellow Scheme 2021/22

Sarah Paxman qualified as a midwife in 2002, and has enjoyed a broad range of experience in both community and hospital settings. Throughout her career, she has had a passion for service improvement, with the ultimate aim of providing the best possible service and care for mothers, babies and families. Sarah took up the opportunity to be seconded to the maternity quality and safety team at her Trust in 2016 and found a real passion for the work. Sarah became a Band 7 Clinical Risk Midwife in 2018, and primarily focuses on clinical incident investigation and management, governance and quality improvement. She still works clinically when she can, and although she misses providing care personally every day, she takes pride in applying her midwifery skills to everything she does, and strives to keep service users at the very centre of her work.

Sarah works with a range of stakeholders, engaging multi-disciplinary teams to pro-actively identify areas for learning and improvement, and leads complex and sensitive patient safety investigations. Among Sarah's key interests is reducing unnecessary separation of mothers and babies and she leads on an ongoing quality improvement programme for her Trust (ATAIN). This is a joint forum between maternity and neonatal services which reviews all term admissions to neonatal units which aims to continuously identify learning themes and improve the quality of care.

Reason for applying for the scheme

Sarah has an eagerness to learn and develop, and aspires to progress to a higher level of leadership and management in future. She welcomes the opportunity to contribute to regional and national priorities as the NHS recovers from the Covid-19 pandemic. Sarah is keen to gain exposure to healthcare service leadership and delivery at regional and national levels, so that she can develop her own leadership skills and make the maximum positive impact in her future career. Sarah is looking forward to getting involved in projects that will challenge her and potentially help to drive quality improvement on a larger scale.
