Mrs Sophie Gatfield

Clinical Fellow, General Medical Council

Sophie is a specialty trainee in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery in the South West of England. She has an interest in leadership development and staff wellbeing.

She studied undergraduate medicine at University of Bristol, graduating in 2015 and has worked in the Bristol area since. Sophie developed an interest in healthcare management and leadership early in her career, achieving a sponsored place on the HELM (healthcare economics, leadership and management) programme with Keele Leadership Academy as a foundation doctor. Her quality improvement work as part of this project earned her first prize at the programme’s presentation day.

Sophie completed a post graduate certificate in Healthcare Leadership and Management with Keele University and continues to take an active role in a range of leadership projects alongside her clinical work. As a core trainee she was nominated by her peers as an inspirational leader – the only person of her training grade to do so.

Sophie values the presence of mentors in both her personal and professional life. Keen to develop her own mentoring skills, she has sought formal training and now works as a professional mentor for University of Bristol medical students. She is an active member of WARD (well and resilient doctors), a fast-growing group of doctors championing wellbeing for medical staff.

Sophie lives in Bristol with her fiancé and two cats. She loves working on her home and garden and is a self-confessed board game nerd. She loves a dinner party with friends and visiting family around the country.

The National Medical Director’s Clinical Fellowship is an exciting opportunity for Sophie to learn more about national healthcare policy and build on her own leadership development in a non-clinical environment She is excited to work with the GMC’s outreach team and among other projects, pursue her interest in improving junior doctor wellbeing.
