Are you an experienced clinical leader passionate about shaping the future of healthcare leadership? The Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management (FMLM) is seeking a dynamic and dedicated leader to become Interim Chair of its Board of Trustees.

About FMLM

FMLM is at the forefront of enhancing leadership across the healthcare system. This interim appointment offers a unique opportunity to lead the FMLM Board during a period of strategic development and transition. 

The Interim Chair will be joining FMLM at a hugely exciting time as the charity begins its journey to develop into a UK College of Clinical Leadership, develops national standards for leaders and managers, overhauls its commercial operations and improves its membership offer. 

The Interim Chair will have the opportunity to influence the strategic direction of a forward-thinking organisation that supports, develops, and champions clinical leadership at every level.

About the role

The Interim Chair will play an essential role in guiding our vision, supporting our mission, and enhancing our impact within the communities we serve. They will collaborate closely with a committed group of Board members and an experienced executive team, providing strategic oversight, fostering sound governance, and ensuring that our values remain at the heart of everything we do. 

This 12-month role requires a leader with a strong commitment to clinical leadership, the ability to inspire and unify diverse stakeholders, and an understanding of the unique opportunities and challenges within the healthcare sector.

We are seeking a strategic thinker who will provide visible, effective and compassionate leadership, ensuring the charity and company work in harmony to fulfill the charity’s mission and maximise its impact.

The responsibilities of the Interim Chair include:

  • Leading the Trustees to ensure the Board fulfils all its duties and requirements and acts within its powers.
  • Monitoring the charity and its limited company’s activities, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, such as charity law and company law. 
  • Overseeing risk management, particularly regarding financial performance, sustainability and resilience of the organisation.
  • Ensuring that FMLM is engaged with its Fellows, members and wider stakeholders and involves them appropriately in its work.
  • Fostering strategic partnerships and collaboration with external stakeholders that align with the charity’s mission and enhance its impact.
  • Directly line manage the CEO, agreeing and monitoring annual appraisal objectives.

About you

Applicants must be registered with the GMC, based in the UK, be a Fellow of FMLM in ‘good standing’, and have strong knowledge of leadership requirements in healthcare from individual to system levels. They will also have:

  • Significant experience in a senior clinical role, with an understanding of the professional concerns and challenges faced by members of the charity.
  • Had roles on boards of similar organisations, such as healthcare charities, professional bodies, or clinical institutions.
  • Experience of working on national clinical policies, and experience of identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks, including financial, reputational, and operational risks.
  • The ability to lead a high-calibre, diverse board, operating by consensus, whilst encouraging constructive debate and challenge.

Term

This is a 12-month, interim role, with recruitment of a permanent role commencing within six months. The appointed candidates will have the option to be considered for the permanent Chair role (2026-2028).
