Professor Sir Mayur Lakhani – thank you
The Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management extends its deepest gratitude to Professor Sir Mayur Lakhani CBE, whose term as Chair of FMLM ends on 31 December.
A former President of the Royal College of General Practitioners and Founding Senior Fellow of FMLM, Sir Mayur was elected Chair of the Board of Trustees in 2019, taking up the post in January 2020 and serving two terms.
Sir Mayur has been integral to the advances FMLM has made over the past few years. We want to recognise his significant contribution to the development of the organisation, and his achievements while in post.
A passionate believer in the importance of medical leadership in delivering the ‘quadruple aim’ of healthcare, Sir Mayur has overseen an overall period of membership growth, with strong growth in FMLM’s number of Fellows, the launch of several new initiatives, and expansion of our Clinical Fellows Schemes.
He has led FMLM and its Board through a period of change and uncertainty, including the Covid-19 pandemic, a new Chief Executive and team structure, making difficult but necessary decisions along the way, including the decision to end the lease of FMLM’s office space during the pandemic, and postponement of the annual conference.
A figurehead for the organisation, he has been an inspiration for many and his down-to-earth, friendly nature has endeared him to colleagues and members alike, particularly at FMLM’s events.
In January 2023, he was recognised in the King’s New Year Honours, being appointed Knight Bachelor for services to general practice.
Sir Mayur leaves FMLM much further on its journey towards Chartered Status, and in a strong position for the future, with many opportunities ahead.
FMLM Chief Executive Officer, Professor Rich Withnall said: “I want to pay tribute to our outgoing Chair, Professor Sir Mayur Lakhani, whose direction, guidance, wisdom, backing and trust have been invaluable.
“I firmly believe that the changes made on his watch will prepare FMLM for a brighter future and stand as a fitting legacy to Sir Mayur’s two terms as FMLM Chair.
“We are hugely grateful for all his efforts and privileged to have had him as Chair. On behalf of all our staff and members, thank you Sir Mayur, for everything you have done for FMLM.”
The interview process for a new Interim Chair is in its final stages and FMLM will announce the successful applicant in January 2025.
